What is a hockle? I didn’t know until I saw it and discovered that there’s a technical name for it.  It’s basically a situation where three strand braided rope starts to unbraid and twist.

Time to route the wiring for the Raymarine multi-function device.

Little Bear Westsail 32 goes for a sail! Blog # 142

I enjoy working on Little Bear. Really, I do. But after two years I’m really itching to get out there on the water.  So, even though the boat isn’t really ready, although there are tools and parts scattered all over, although the head doesn’t work, although the lights are only half working – I decided to get out for a sail. Sail meaning ‘motor’.

July first; Canada’s 150th birthday seemed like as good an occasion to get out and go for a trip down the river and around the bend. So that’s what we did. Dread Pirate Admiral & a friend took Little Bear out to see the fireworks in White Rock…

 

Of course, seeing fireworks means that we’d be out in the dark. The Admiral said that without a head there was no way we’d be anchoring out so we had to navigate back to the dock in the dark. Fortunately the tide was right and we managed to get her back to her slip without mishap.  Although it was a bit of a white knuckle ride up the river.

Special thanks go out to all the power boats with their 5′ wakes blasting past us to create the atmosphere of a hurricane in full fettle.  So kind and thoughtful of you. Blessings.

Little Bear Westsail 32 refit: Tiller Rebuild Blog #137

Rebuilding the tiller was a couple of days worth of work. First I had to deal with the delamination problem, then I sanded it down and gave it a coat of epoxy to protect it from the weather.

The suit of sails I inherited with the boat are original equipment. That means that the sails are 41 years old. The genoa had been left to the wind and was tattered and torn. It was the first thing I threw out when I brought the boat home. The main sail has been stuffed in my shop-locker for the last two  years. I have had it out a couple of times to look at and refold, but my impression of it was that it was better suited as material for a sack rather than a mainsail.

In this episode I take delivery of three new sails. My new genoa (130%), stays’l, and main. This is what a suit of new sails from North Sails look like being installed:

Little Bear Westsail 32 refit: Cape Horn Windane pt.1 Blog #133

With his episode, I get to install a bit of hardware that Little Bear has never had before: a windvane.

I chose Cape Horn Windvane for a few reasons:

  • Price
  • Simplicity of construction
  • Reputation
  • Proven track record

I’ve never sailed with a windvane before but I can see the value of not being glued to a tiller / wheel.  I expect to do a lot of single-handing so being able to roam about the boat without having to tend the tiller seems to be a very good idea.

The Cape Horn also has the ability to integrate an auto-pilot. And because the windvane supplies the power for the tiller a smaller, efficient pilot can be utilized. Bonus.

Installing the windvane was fairly straightforward. However, for the first time during the refit of Little Bear I hurt myself.  I caught the tip of my  finger between a strut and the chuck of my drill. I basically ripped my finger nail off.  In the video you can see the moment it happened.  I dropped the drill but it is tough and suffered no damage.

I have yet to rig the vane with blocks and line but I don’t think that will be a big deal.  I just have to follow the instructions correctly and away I go!

Little Bear Westsail 32 refit: Bowsprit Platform on! Blog #132

Arrrrr me hearties. Welcome aboard.

This episode is all about getting the platform installed and aligned. There was a bit if a curve-ball I had to deal with but nothing that liquid joinery didn’t take care of! Oh the wonders of modern technology & chemistry.

The one part of this job that I wish I didn’t have to do was to take off the forestay. But the bowsprit pulpit won’t go back on with the forstay / furler in place. So, off it came.

The biggest challenge was to drill the holes for the support blocks and get them aligned. I explain in the video where you can actually see what I’m describing.
